Top Places to Visit in Odisha
- Puri — The City of Lord Jagannath: One of the four sacred Char Dhams of Hinduism, Puri is dominated by the Sri Jagannath Temple — an 11th-century Kalinga-style temple rising 65 metres above the coastal town. The temple is associated with the Rath Yatra — the world’s largest chariot festival — held annually in June or July and drawing over a million devotees from across India and the world. Puri Beach stretches for miles along the Bay of Bengal and is famous for its spectacular sunrise views and the annual Puri Beach Festival.
- Konark — The Sun Temple: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s most awe-inspiring architectural achievements, the Konark Sun Temple was built in the 13th century and conceived as a colossal stone chariot of the Sun God — with 24 intricately carved wheels and 7 stone horses. Every surface of the temple is covered with exquisite sculptural carvings of celestial beings, mythological scenes, musicians, and dancers. The annual Konark Dance Festival held every December against the backdrop of the illuminated temple is one of India’s most magnificent classical dance events.
- Bhubaneswar — The Temple City of India: The capital and largest city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar is a living museum of Kalinga temple architecture — a city that once had over 700 temples, of which 62 survive today. The Lingaraj Temple — dedicated to Lord Shiva and dating to the 11th century — is the largest and most magnificent temple in the city. The Mukteshwar Temple — often called the ‘Gem of Odisha architecture’ — and the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves — 2nd-century BCE Jain rock-cut caves — are other essential Bhubaneswar experiences.
- Chilika Lake — Asia’s Largest Coastal Lagoon: Stretching across 1,100 square kilometres along the Odisha coast, Chilika Lake is Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Every winter, over a million migratory birds — including flamingos, grey pelicans, and bar-headed geese from Siberia and Central Asia — descend on Chilika. The lake is also home to the rare Irrawaddy dolphins, spotted near Satpada Island. The sacred Kalijai Temple island in the middle of the lake is a key pilgrimage destination.
- Bhitarkanika — The Mangrove Wilderness: One of India’s most spectacular wildlife sanctuaries, Bhitarkanika National Park covers 672 square kilometres of dense mangrove forests — India’s second-largest mangrove ecosystem after the Sundarbans. The park is home to the world’s largest population of saltwater crocodiles — over 1,700 recorded — as well as olive ridley sea turtles and over 215 species of birds. The nearby Gahirmatha Beach is the world’s largest mass nesting site of olive ridley sea turtles, witnessing hundreds of thousands of turtles coming ashore between November and March.
- Koraput & Tribal Odisha — Living Culture of Ancient India: The southern districts of Koraput, Rayagada, and Malkangiri are home to Odisha’s richest tribal cultures. The weekly tribal haats (markets) — particularly the Chatikona market of the Dongria Kondh and the Onukudelli market of the Bonda people — are extraordinary windows into living tribal traditions unchanged for centuries. Duduma Waterfalls on the Machkund River and Deomali Peak — Odisha’s highest point at 1,672 metres — are the region’s outstanding natural highlights.
- Sambalpur — Hirakud and the Sambalpuri Weave: The cultural hub of western Odisha, Sambalpur is famous for the Hirakud Dam — the longest earthen dam in the world at 26 km — built across the Mahanadi River. The city is also the home of the celebrated Sambalpuri Bandha (ikat) silk and cotton textiles, renowned across India for their bold geometric patterns. The Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary and the Huma Temple — the only leaning temple in Odisha — are key regional attractions.
- Chandipur — The Vanishing Sea Beach: Chandipur Beach in the Balasore district is famous for its extraordinary tidal phenomenon — the sea recedes up to 5 kilometres during low tide, allowing visitors to walk on the exposed seabed — one of India’s most unique and rare coastal experiences. Gopalpur-on-Sea in Ganjam district is another charming and tranquil seaside town with a colonial-era lighthouse, fishing harbour, and a golden beach largely free of crowds.
Best Time to Visit Odisha
- October–February (Winter — Best Season): The most highly recommended season to visit Odisha — cool, dry, and pleasant weather with temperatures between 15°C and 28°C. Puri beach, Konark, Bhubaneswar temples, Chilika Lake, and Bhitarkanika are all at their finest. Migratory birds arrive at Chilika Lake from November making it India’s finest winter birdwatching destination. The Konark Dance Festival (December), Puri Beach Festival (November), and tribal festivals across Koraput and Rayagada are major cultural highlights of the winter season.
- March–May (Summer): Temperatures rise significantly — Bhubaneswar and coastal Odisha can reach 38°C–42°C. However, tribal haat visits in Koraput and Rayagada remain rewarding in March and April. The olive ridley turtle nesting season at Gahirmatha Beach peaks in January–March making early spring a remarkable time for wildlife visits to Bhitarkanika. The Rath Yatra preparation period in Puri from May is a fascinating time to witness chariot construction and temple rituals.
- June–September (Monsoon): Odisha receives heavy monsoon rainfall from June through September. The world-famous Rath Yatra of Puri — held in June or July — is the most auspicious event of the monsoon calendar. Waterfalls across Odisha — including Barehipani, Joranda, and Duduma — are thundering at their most powerful and beautiful during the rains. Bhitarkanika’s mangroves are lush and atmospheric, though boat safaris may be limited during peak monsoon months.
