Karnataka
Welcome to Karnataka — The Land of Magnificence
Karnataka is one of India’s most historically rich, geographically diverse, and culturally magnificent states — a vast land that encompasses the ancient Vijayanagara Empire ruins of Hampi, the golden splendour of Mysore’s royal palaces, the misty coffee highlands of Coorg, the dramatic cave temples of Badami, Aihole, and Pattadakal, the pristine beaches of Gokarna, and the wild elephant corridors of Kabini — all within a single extraordinary state. Karnataka is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Hampi, Pattadakal, and the Western Ghats — and shelters the largest population of Asian elephants in the world within its forests. From the tech-forward Garden City of Bengaluru to the sacred Jain pilgrimage of Shravanabelagola and Jog Falls — India’s second-highest waterfall, Karnataka rewards every kind of traveller with extraordinary depth and variety. Our Karnataka tour packages are crafted to guide you through every magnificent layer of this incomparable South Indian state.
Top Places to Visit in Karnataka
- Hampi — The Ruins of a Lost Empire: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s most awe-inspiring destinations, Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire — at its peak in the 14th–16th centuries, one of the largest cities in the world. The Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple with its iconic Stone Chariot and Musical Pillars, the Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables, and the vast Royal Enclosure are spread across a surreal boulder-strewn landscape along the Tungabhadra River that is unlike anywhere else on earth.
- Mysore (Mysuru) — The City of Palaces: Karnataka’s most-visited city, Mysore is synonymous with royal grandeur, traditional silk, sandalwood, and the legendary Mysore Dasara festival. The Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas Palace) is India’s most visited monument after the Taj Mahal — an Indo-Saracenic masterpiece illuminated by 100,000 light bulbs every Sunday and during Dasara. The Chamundeshwari Temple atop Chamundi Hills, Brindavan Gardens, and the Devaraja Market are other essential Mysore experiences.
- Coorg (Kodagu) — The Scotland of India: Nestled in the Western Ghats at 900–1,700 metres, Coorg is India’s leading coffee-producing district and one of its most scenic hill destinations. The endless coffee and tea estates, Abbey Falls, the Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple) in Bylakuppe — the largest Tibetan settlement in India outside Tibet — the Dubare Elephant Camp on the Cauvery River, and treks to Tadiandamol peak at 1,748 metres make Coorg perfect for nature lovers, families, and honeymooners.
- Badami, Aihole & Pattadakal — Cradle of Indian Temple Architecture: The Bagalkot district of northern Karnataka is home to one of India’s most remarkable concentrations of ancient rock-cut and structural temples. Badami is famous for its 4th–8th century Chalukya cave temples carved into dramatic red sandstone cliffs. Aihole — known as the ‘Cradle of Indian Temple Architecture’ — has over 125 ancient temples dating from the 4th to 12th centuries. Pattadakal — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is a stunning complex of 10 major temples representing the finest flowering of Chalukya architecture.
- Kabini & Nagarhole — Karnataka’s Finest Wildlife Destination: Set on the southern banks of the Kabini reservoir, Kabini lies within the Nagarhole National Park and the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — one of India’s richest ecosystems sheltering tigers, leopards, dholes, and the largest concentration of Asian elephants in the world. Coracle and jeep safaris on the Kabini backwaters offer extraordinary close-encounter wildlife experiences. The summer dry season from March to May — when animals congregate at the waterhole — is considered India’s finest wildlife viewing window.
- Gokarna — The Sacred Beach Town: A small, sacred coastal town in the Uttara Kannada district, Gokarna combines a revered Shiva temple (Mahabaleshwar Temple) with some of India’s most beautiful and uncrowded beaches. Om Beach — named for its natural Om-shaped coastline, Kudle Beach, Half Moon Beach, and Paradise Beach are four stunning consecutive beaches accessible by a scenic cliff-top trek. Gokarna is a perfect alternative to Goa for travellers seeking quieter, more spiritual beach experiences.
- Belur, Halebidu & Shravanabelagola — Hoysala Heritage Circuit: The Hoysala Empire temples of Belur and Halebidu — built between the 11th and 13th centuries — are among India’s most exquisitely detailed temple complexes. The Chennakeshava Temple at Belur took 103 years to complete and is covered with thousands of individual sculptures, no two identical. Shravanabelagola is home to the Gommateshwara statue — at 57 feet, the world’s tallest monolithic free-standing statue and one of Jainism’s most sacred pilgrimage sites.
- Bengaluru — India’s Silicon Valley & Garden City: Karnataka’s cosmopolitan capital, Bengaluru is India’s fastest-growing metropolitan city and the country’s IT and startup hub. The Lalbagh Botanical Garden, Cubbon Park, the magnificent Vidhana Soudha, ISKCON Bengaluru — one of the largest ISKCON temples in the world, and the vibrant craft brewery and dining scene across Church Street and Indiranagar make Bengaluru a dynamic and essential stop on any Karnataka itinerary.
Best Time to Visit Karnataka
- October–February (Winter — Peak Season): The best and most universally recommended season for Karnataka — cool, dry, and sunny across the state with temperatures between 15°C and 28°C. Hampi, Mysore, Badami, Belur-Halebidu, Kabini, and Gokarna are all at their finest. The Mysore Dasara festival in October — celebrated for 10 days with grand processions and the illuminated palace — is one of India’s greatest cultural spectacles and a highlight of any Karnataka itinerary.
- March–May (Summer): Summer is warm to hot across the plains with temperatures reaching 32°C–38°C. However, Coorg, Kudremukh, and Agumbe remain pleasantly cool in the Western Ghats. March to May is the finest season for wildlife safaris at Kabini — the dry summer forces animals to congregate at waterholes, providing extraordinary tiger, leopard, and elephant sightings. Gokarna and the Karnataka coast are warm but uncrowded and ideal for beach holidays.
- June–September (Monsoon): The Western Ghats receive extremely heavy rainfall during the monsoon — Coorg, Agumbe, Kudremukh, and the Karavali coast transform into spectacularly lush and misty green landscapes. Jog Falls is at its most thunderous and dramatic during July and August. Hampi and Badami are accessible with fewer crowds and a moody atmospheric charm in the rains. Wildlife safaris at Kabini and Nagarhole are suspended during peak monsoon from June to September.
